Before the R8, Audi wasn’t known to make supercars. Sure, there were a few prototypes they played with but the R8 was their first real attempt at introducing a mainstream supercar. And while there were a few niggles initially — they borrowed the V8 engine from the Lamborghini Gallardo, put in a traditional gearbox, and introduced a side-blade (which is actually a design flaw) — Audi persevered and developed it into a phenomenon over the years. This was meant to be a flagship car but its popularity among enthusiasts has established it as one of the greatest cars ever made.
